Leeds Futures - Dentistry & Medicine

Leeds Futures - Dentistry and Medicine is our flagship outreach programme for Year 12 students interested in pursuing a career in Dentistry or Medicine. Running over twelve months from January in Year 12 to December in Year 13, the programme is designed to help you explore your chosen profession, develop the knowledge and skills needed for university applications, and make informed decisions about your future.

Most programme activities are delivered jointly, giving you the opportunity to work alongside other ambitious students interested in healthcare careers. You will also follow a dedicated Dentistry or Medicine strand for selected activities, allowing you to gain deeper insight into your chosen profession.

Throughout the programme, you will take part in workshops, campus visits, and enrichment activities alongside your current studies, helping you prepare for applying to selective universities.

The programme runs from January in Year 12 until December in Year 13.

Year 12

• Launch event, providing you with more information about the programme and applying to university.
• Subject-specific taster sessions, helping you develop a greater understanding of Dentistry or Medicine.
• Campus Day 1, where you will join your chosen Dentistry or Medicine strand to gain a deeper insight into your intended profession.
• Skills workshops, helping you develop the skills needed to make a competitive application.
• Study skills sessions, supporting your success in your current and future studies.
• Campus Day 2, focused on preparing for university admissions tests and the application process.
• Personal statement workshops, helping you understand how universities use personal statements and how to showcase your experiences effectively.
• Strand-specific online sessions, providing additional insight into Dentistry or Medicine.

Year 13

• Interview skills workshop, helping you understand different interview formats and the qualities universities are looking for.
• A strand-specific Mock MMI (Multiple Mini Interview), allowing you to practise interview stations relevant to Dentistry or Medicine.
• Futures Graduation, celebrating your achievements throughout the programme.

Most online workshops and campus visits are delivered jointly, allowing students interested in Dentistry and Medicine to learn together and benefit from shared experiences. However, some activities, including selected online sessions, Campus Day 1, and the Mock MMI, are delivered within your chosen subject strand to provide more tailored support and guidance.

You will also have the opportunity to visit the University of Leeds for two on-campus days during the programme, where you can explore university life, meet fellow participants, and gain a deeper understanding of studying Dentistry or Medicine.

Online sessions take place fortnightly on a Wednesday evening (5:30 - 7PM) during term time, helping you fit the programme around your studies.

Our on-campus days take place during the Easter holidays and Spring Bank half-term in Year 12, helping minimise disruption to your studies.

You will also gain access to an online learning space, where you can revisit resources, complete activities, and reflect on your learning throughout the programme.

Leeds Futures - Dentistry and Medicine is open to current Year 12 students (or first-year college students) with a genuine interest in applying to study Dentistry or Medicine at university.

We are committed to improving access to higher education and supporting talented students from backgrounds that are currently under-represented in higher education and healthcare professions.

Students applying to Leeds Futures - Dentistry and Medicine must:

• Be a current Year 12 or first-year college student.
• Be studying, or have achieved, suitable GCSEs and Level 3 qualifications (such as A Levels or equivalent) required for entry to Dentistry or Medicine at a selective university.
• Be able to commit to attending fortnightly online sessions and the two Year 12 on-campus days.

Students must also meet two of the following criteria:

• Your parents or carers did not go to university.
• Your home postcode is in an area with low levels of participation in higher education and / or high levels of socioeconomic deprivation.
• You are from a household with a gross annual income of £25,000 or below, or eligible for free school meals during your secondary education.
• You attended or attend a school which performed below the national average at GCSE.
• Your personal circumstances have had a disruptive impact on your education.
• You are care experienced.

Consideration may also be given to applicants who meet our postcode criterion only.

Priority will be given to students who meet the above criteria and are from groups currently under-represented in Dentistry, Medicine, and higher education more broadly.
