Discover STEM at Leeds, is a pre-16 outreach programme for students in year 9 – 10 to introduce STEM subjects taught at university, discover related careers and research related to real world applications.
A two-part programme to include an in-school workshop and a visit to campus, students will receive a certificate of achievement at the end of the programme.
Programme overview
Stage 1: In-School Workshops
The in-school workshop (from October – March) will introduce STEM courses and the benefits of studying at university. The campus visit will involve practical activities in specialist STEM laboratories, tour of the department and access to undergraduate students studying a STEM subject.
Stage 2: Campus Visits
These campus days will be delivered on 15 December 2026, 20 January 2027 and 9 March 2027 and schools are invited to attend 1 of 3 events scheduled throughout the year. Teachers have the option to select a campus day that is most relevant to their subject.
All resources and materials for both campus events will be provided.
- Tues 15 December 2026, 9:10 – 2:30pm - Leeds: the power of STEM in medicine!
The subject of Medicine interests many students, but there are lots of career paths other than becoming a doctor. Scientists, engineers, and mathematicians work alongside medical doctors and other clinicians, helping them to understand the spread of disease, discover new cures, and develop new technologies for diagnosis and treatment.

Delve into the world of materials science research across multiple STEM subjects at the University of Leeds. Learn about material properties and the importance of materials in everyday life.
- Mon 8 March 2027, 9:10 – 2:30pm - Leeds: together in STEM!
Celebrate International Women's Day at the University of Leeds and discover STEM careers and research championed by women at the university. All students welcome, female and nonbinary students will be prioritised.

What are the planned activities?
There are three stages to this programme:
- Stage 1: In-School Workshops
- Stage 2: Campus Visits
What are the requirements for the event?
Participants must be in Year 9 & 10. All schools and students must commit to participating in the In-school workshop and attending one campus visit.
All visitors must abide by our health & safety procedures. This event is usually oversubscribed, so please only request the number of places you can fill.
Where does the event take place?
Our Engineering Education Outreach Fellows will visit your school to deliver a talk. The on-campus events will be held on the University of Leeds campus.

The risk assessment will be emailed to you along with arrival information, once your places have been confirmed.
